BKM: 5 Million Cards Met The İnternet During The Pandemic Period

According to the data released by the Interbank Card Center, in April, the share of the card payment via internet reached a record level with 24 percent.

Interbank Card Center (BKM) announced the data of April 2020. According to BKM data, at the end of April, a total of 241 million cards found in Turkey, of which 71 million credit card, debit card consists of the 170 million units. Compared to April 2019, there is a 6 percent increase in the number of credit cards and an 11 percent increase in the number of debit cards.

According to BKM data, a total payment of 67.8 billion TL was made in April with debit cards and credit cards. While 56.8 billion TL of this amount was paid with credit cards, 11 billion TL of bank cards were used. When analyzed in terms of growth rates, payments by debit card increased by 9 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, while payments by credit card decreased by 14 percent.

In this period when we had extraordinary days, card payments from the internet continued to rise rapidly. The amount of online card payments increased by 13 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 16 billion TL. The share of online card payments in total card payments reached a record level of 24 percent. In other words, in April, 1 TL of every 4 TL card payment was made online.

The number of card users who chose to pay over the internet continued to increase. In April, 18 million different cards were paid online, while 2 million cards were used for the first time. Considering that 3 million cards were used for online card payments for the first time in the previous month, it was observed that 5 million cards were introduced to internet payments during the pandemic period. Market-food payments made via cards on the internet tripled last year, reaching TL 2.4 billion.

 

When the distribution of card payments made in the internet in April is analyzed, it is seen that the highest increase was 220 percent in the market-food sector compared to the same period of the previous year. Market-food sector was followed by electronic goods with 122 percent increase, furniture and decoration with 87 percent increase, clothing with 62 percent increase and health / cosmetics sectors with 20 percent increase.
